we eat a lot of burritos
at our house
and for years
i've just bought whatever tortillas
the grocery store had on sale
but a couple months ago
i got the itch
to try my hand at homemade tortillas
so naturally
i went to Pinterest
and found a yummy looking recipe
that led me to Cuddles and Chaos
these tortillas are so simple to make
and so absolutely delish
and whilst they take a little time
it is totally worth the effort
to make a batch of 12 tortillas
you will need:
- 3 cups flour
- 1 T salt
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup hot water
combine dry ingredients in a mixer or bowl
then add in the oil and water
mix until your dough looks roughly like this
and dump it on a floured surface
next
divide the dough into 12 smaller pieces
heat a not stick pan over medium-high heat
on floured surface
roll out each dough ball until it's a flat 10 inch circle
(i kept adding flour to my counter so the dough wouldn't stick)
also
be sure to cover the dough balls
with a towel whilst your working
so they don't dry out
toss your rolled out tortillas
one at a time
into the hot pan
and use a fork to pop any dough bubbles
(i don't know why the dough bubble are bad
but apparently they are, so pop 'em!)
wait about 30 seconds
and flip the tortilla
cooking another 30 seconds
you don't want flour collecting in the pan
as it will burn the tortillas
so be sure to dump out or wipe away extra flour from the pan
after each tortilla cooks
and then
whilst taking photos
wipe floury hands on black yoga pants
please tell me
i'm not the only one
who makes a mess whilst cooking
i like to cover the stack of finished tortillas
to keep them warm and soft
until dinner time
and lest you think
that these bad boys
are only good for Mexican meals
think again
you can add just about
any savory topping you like
hummus and veggies
tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella
spinach, olives and grilled chicken
whatevs
do you have a favorite tortilla toppin?
Recipe:
- 3 cups white flour
- 1 tablespoon salt
- 2 teaspoons garlic powder
- 1/3 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup hot water
Instructions
- Combine dry ingredients. Add in oil and water and mix until dough pulls away from bowl. Pour onto floured surface and divide dough into twelve pieces. Cover remaining dough when rolling out individual balls. Roll ball on well-floured surface into thin, 10 inch circles. Toss tortillas into hot, non-stick pan. Cook about 30 seconds on each side, popping any bubbles that form. Cover cooked tortillas with dry towel to keep warm and soft. Serve immediately, or store in fridge for up to 3 days.
