Have you ever wondered what a typical homeschooling day looks like? Actually, there is no such thing as a typical homeschooling day. Every homeschool family is unique in the way they 'do' school, and even within families, different days can look...well...different from each other.
However, I felt it might be helpful for you to see what a random Monday looks like for us, with our kids in 6th, 5th, 3rd, and 1st grades.
Mondays during the school year at Chez Agnew are Co-Op days. We begin our days with personal devotions. My older kids set their alarms for 6:30 to have their own quiet time in their rooms. I usually wake at 6:15 to have quiet time, shower and dress.
7:00 a.m. Breakfast together, which usually entails cold cereal and morning prayer together. After breakfast the kids get dressed and we all do morning chores. I set the oven timer for this to keep everyone on task. The kids know what chores they are to do by checking their Chore Chart.
9:00 a.m. We leave for Co-Op. This year we are starting with an advanced Sign Language class at 9:15 a.m. for older students and moms.
10:00 a.m. Co-Op begins with announcements and prayer.
10:10 a.m. Students go to their first class which is either Chemistry or Window on the World. Kids are divided into lower and upper elementary groups or into preschool or nursery. Moms who aren't teaching in the morning stay in the nursery to visit while taking care of the babies.
11:25 a.m. Elementary classes flipflop.
12:30 p.m. Lunch break
1:00 p.m. Afternoon electives start with the older kids doing a class on Journalism in which they will be writing a Co-Op newspaper. Younger kids are doing a lego lapbook class.
2:30 p.m. Clean up and go home. Or, if the weather is nice, we will hang out and let the kids play outside for a while.
2:45ish p.m. My kids have to read on their own for 30 minutes.
3:15 p.m. Free time. I usually will let the kids play wii or board games. Sometimes they can watch tv or a video.
5:00 p.m. Kids help with supper prep as needed with cooking, setting the table or general pick-up around the house.
5:30 p.m. Supper together.
6:00 p.m. Mom and dad wash dishes with the kids helping to clear the table and put leftovers and clean dishes away.
6:30 to 8:00 p.m. We hang out together playing games, reading aloud or watching a fun program on TV. Mondays are our free nights with no outside activities/meetings/sports.
8:00 p.m. Bedtime for younger boys. We usually all get together for bedtime prayers before sending them up to bed.
8:30 p.m. Bedtime for older kids. They are allowed to read in beds for a while. My daughter does this every night because she adores reading. My son rarely does this because he abhors reading. Sigh.
10:00 p.m. Mom hits the sack. Dad follows after watching ESPN for a bit.
