Our Ordinary Schoolroom

Lately fellow homeschooling moms have asked me what our schoolroom looks like. So I decided to tidy it up and post photos of the room where we do most of our lessons. But first, here's a look back through our schoolrooms of previous years.

When we first began homeschooling, we used the dining room of the house we lived in 6 years ago. Bear in mind that this is obviously not a photo of us actually doing school, but it is the best photo I could find of the room. Yeehaw.

Then we moved and had an eat-in kitchen where we did our schoolwork. Sorry, I couldn't find a photo of that room!

Then we moved AGAIN to our current home...and last one, I hope. We did our lessons in the kitchen back then. The cabinets to the right of the photo were used to store our school things. Notice the Presidents on the fridge?

Back then we were using our current schoolroom as a TV room. Then we realized what a waste of space that was and moved the TV into our living room. We moved all the shelving we could spare into the schoolroom and stuck a table and chairs in it, and....voila!

Let me explain our space a bit. Obviously, the workspace is in the center of the room, with storage on every wall. On the far left are the kids' individual storage boxes. Above the boxes are our maps and next it them is whiteboard sitting on a chest of supplies. We covered the remaining wall space with the kids' artwork, maps or posters.

Here is our reading nook, with books and magazines stored above. I'd like a smaller couch or loveseat there, but it works for now.

This is the computer and printer workspace.

Here is our art center. There are supplies stored beneath and we remove the tablecloth when in use.

Here are just a few more photos of the room. The white bookcase is organized by shelf and is where we keep dictionaries, encyclopedias and other reference books.

The tall brown bookcase in the photo below is used for fiction. Adult stuff on the upper shelves and kid stuff on the lower shelves.

So there you have it. Our ordinary schoolroom. Nothing fancy or huge, and it does tend to get a bit cluttered, but we are fortunate enough to have a separate designated space to use for this purpose. Come summer we plan to pull up the old carpet and expose the vintage linoleum floor underneath. We also need a better table. And since our ceilings are so high I would like to figure out a way to utilize the top 3 feet of empty walls. Maybe built-in shelves? We'll see.

I'd love to see comments from you telling me all about your school space.
